After a year filled with heartbreak, betrayal, and setbacks that threatened to throw his career off-track, Johnny Gargano ended 2017 on the highest note imaginable. With the NXT Universe cheering him on, the beloved Johnny Wrestling prevailed in an utterly wild Fatal 4-Way Match against three of NXT’s most dominant Superstars — Lars Sullivan, Aleister Black, and Killian Dain — to earn an NXT Title Match against Andrade “Cien” Almas at TakeOver: Philadelphia.

The rip-roaring brawl was all-out action from the opening bell. Sullivan displayed his immense power early by catching a moonsault and a dive to the floor by Black and Gargano, respectively. Yet, when the 322-pound Beast of Belfast took flight with a dive of his own, Sullivan had no choice but to crumble under Dain’s weight.

The fight spilled up the ramp, where Sullivan, now recovered from Dain’s leap of faith, press-slammed Gargano off the stage onto Black. The Colorado monster’s subsequent attempt to put Johnny Wrestling through the announce desk was thwarted, and Sullivan soon found himself under attack by Dain again, this time with the SAnitY heavyweight jumping off the stage and splashing Sullivan through the table.

More big hits flew once the battle re-entered the ring. After tagging Dain and Sullivan with his signature strikes, the Dutch destroyer appeared to be on the verge of victory until Undisputed ERA made their presence felt in the No-Disqualification Match. First, NXT Tag Team Champions Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly pulled Black to the floor, only to have the mercurial Superstar handle them with ease. Undisputed ERA frontman Adam Cole, looking for payback for his loss to Black in a Qualifying Match, then attacked the sinister striker, dropping him with a neckbreaker onto his knee.

Never one to let an injustice go unanswered, Gargano lept to Black’s aid, tackling Cole with a suicide dive. He then spun Dain into Sullivan, smashing them into the steel steps and effectively taking out both hosses before returning his focus to Black. Gargano spiked Black with a slingshot DDT and pinned him, ending Black’s undefeated streak and causing the NXT Universe to erupt in chants of “Johnny Wrestling.”

Battered and bruised, Gargano savored the moment as the realization sunk in that an NXT Championship opportunity against Almas, which once seemed so far-fetched, is now guaranteed.

Aleister’s Black first time speaking in front of the NXT Universe didn’t disappoint as he recalled his 15-year journey to NXT and the “scars” that tell his story.

Black’s first words in front of the NXT fans at Full Sail University were clear and concise, but before he could finish his message, he was interrupted by The Velveteen Dream.

The Dream proceeded to break down the dark and shadowy Superstar, going as far as to call Black “afraid.” Before the flamboyant Superstar’s critique could continue, Black kicked the microphone right out of The Dream’s hand.

Black immediately dropped to the mat in his signature seated pose, but The Dream was not intimidated. Instead, the sensual Superstar got on his knees and leaned in close to Black before effortlessly sliding out of the ring, without as much as a flinch from Black.

The tense encounter had the NXT Universe on the edge of their seats as they wondered what’s next for these two vastly different personalities.

On his transition to NXT:

“The transition to WWE has been an incredible road. It’s been great, it’s been difficult, it’s been motivating, and it has allowed me as a person to just completely see myself differently and allowed me to grow in a different perspective with their input.”

On the Aleister Black name and character:

“I think Aleister Black is the most Tommy End name you will get within WWE and NXT. I had some say in it. The whole Aleister Black character is a creation of my influences, Triple H and NXT, and everyone combined. I always try to compare my previous installment with being a seed, and within NXT and WWE, it has allowed me to grow into this flower that’s called Aleister Black, and let’s see if we can turn that flower into a field. We’re not done yet. This is literally just the beginning of what I’m going to be in the NXT Universe and WWE Universe.”

On his dream opponent at Wrestlemania:

“Right now, just because I’m such a fan of him and his work it’d be Randy Orton. There’s something about him, and it’s the same with Bray Wyatt. They are two gentlemen who understand themselves and their craft so well. So I’d say one of those two.”

On NXT:

“We gotta keep this train rolling and that’s what we’re doing. We’re very thankful for the Nakamura’s, the Joe’s, the Fin Balor’s, the Tye Dillinger’s, the Revival’s, the Drifter’s, that kept the platform alive the way they did and we’re just keeping that train rolling. Believe me, you’re going to see a show coming to Brooklyn, and it’s going to be fantastic. We’re going to keep this NXT train rolling and it’s going to be better than ever, I guarantee you that.”

It’s hard to tell which blow was the harshest for Kassius Ohno: The collision of expectation and reality, or the wallop that Aleister Black’s boot put on his face.

Ohno put himself in the situation of getting clocked and pinned by Black, who remains undefeated in NXT competition on WWE Network. He was out to prove to himself that he’s a main player in NXT and, by asking General Manager William Regal to give him a challenge, show Hideo Itami that there’s a befitting way to move past setbacks. With Black, Ohno got his wish.

They shook hands and traded holds at the start of the match, revealing their mutual respect hadn’t faded since the days that Ohno helped train Black. However, it wasn’t long before the intensity kicked up a notch, thanks to a rough chop from Ohno, and NXT’s two premier strikers began bludgeoning the spirit out of each other.

NXT’s Knockout Artist put Black to the test. He landed big hits and, in between, even dared to mock his opponent. The antics seemed to backfire, though, as Black angrily stomped Ohno. In the end, it was a brutal and quick-moving exchange that ended with Ohno attempting the Rolling Elbow, only to be met by the Black Mass spinning heel kick. It wasn’t easy this time, but NXT’s serene striker made another Superstar fade to black.

Raw Superstar Curt Hawkins came to NXT to try to even the score with the competitor who recently topped him on WWE Main Event, Aleister Black. Unfortunately for the self-proclaimed “Captain of the Star Factory,” his fate was no different than anyone else who has tried his luck against Black.

Employing a variety of strikes, the eerily composed Black connected with a high-flying quebrada before polishing off Hawkins with his Black Mass spinning heel kick, much to the delight of the sold-out Allstate Arena.
